Inner City vs Outer Space – ‘Attack the Block’

Here at the All Action No Plot Movie Blog, we’re very excited about the prospect of this movie. Although it’s already been released in the UK, ‘Attack the Block’ is so far a bit of an unknown proposition here in Australia. Hopefully that will all change and this British sci-fi action/comedy movie will soon get a release date in Australia.

The good news is that a US release date of July 29th has just been announced, which bodes well for an Australia theatrical release. Apparently the major obstacle for the US release was a concern that local audiences wouldn’t understand the inner-city South London accents (I remember a similar concern over the Scottish accents in Trainspotting at the time). The one drawback of the July 29th release date is that it will be going head-to-head with the Jon Favreau/Daniel Craig sci-fi blockbuster Cowboys and Aliens. Let’s hope it can hold its own!

For those new to Attack the Block – and no, its nothing to do with the reality tv show on Channel 7 – its the directorial debut of British Comedian Joe Cornish. It has been produced by Big Talk Productions, responsible for Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz and Scott Pilgrim vs The World, and even stars Nick Frost (albeit in a minor role). It’s been receiving highly positive reviews across the board since its release, and currently has a Rotten Tomatoes score of 90%.

As for the movie itself, here’s the summary from the official website – :

“Attack the Block is a fast, funny, frightening action adventure movie that pits a teen gang against and invasion of savage alien monsters. It turns a London housing estate into a sci-fi playground. A tower block into a fortress under siege. And teenage street kids into heroes. Its inner city vs outer space.”

Don’t know about you, but I’ve got all my fingers crossed for an Australian release…
