Albert Finney replaces Judi Dench as M in Bond 23

Bit torn on this if I’m honest. Always thought Dame Judy was an inspired casting choice as Bond’s superior at MI6, but equally, I’m excited by the news that British acting legend Albert Finney has been cast to replace her.

Still, always a shame to see such a fine actress as Dench step down from a role she had most certainly made her own, but part f me thinks she maybe should have gone back when they ‘rebooted’ the franchise with Daniel Craig and Casino Royale. The producers had already made the decision to change so much about the movies that perhaps Dench should have gone too? As to her replacement, Albert Finney of course is no stranger to the spy thriller genre, after his roles in the Bourne movies, so should fit in quite nicely.

Of course, Finney has been linked to the project for some time now, although the rumors up to now had him pegged as a villain. The villains will in fact be played by Javier Bardem and Ralph Fiennes, with Naomie Harris as Moneypenny. Sam Mendes will direct.

Bond 23, or ‘Skyfall’ if you prefer, will open in the UK on the 26th October 2012, in the US on the 9th November 2012. No Australian release date as of yet…
