Ron Howard to direct Stephen King’s The Dark Tower

Stephen King’s The Dark Tower is a huge seven-novel epic with a huge fan following. Encompassing genres such as fantasy, Westerns and horror, the series began in 1982 with The Last Gunslinger and finished in 200 with The Dark Tower. An eighth book (set between books 4 & 5) is due for release later this year.

The project is fronted by Ron Howard (director – The Da Vinci Code, A Beautiful Mind, Apollo 13), Akiva Goldsman (writer – The Da Vinci Code, A Beautiful Mind, I Am Legend) and Brian Grazer (producer – 24, American Gangster, A Beautiful Mind, Apollo 13), so there’s no doubting the credentials of those trying to get it off the ground.

The Dark Tower is one of those projects that has even knocking around forever, but has never seemed to get off the ground. In fact, the whole project seemed doomed as recent as last July when Universal passed on it. However the good news for fans is that Warner Bros are now in talks to take up the movie.

The other piece of good news is of course that HBO is part of the same media group as Warner Bros, and there is already strong Interest in bringing the books to TV as well.

As for casting, Javier Barden is reportedly the front-runner for the main character of Roland Deschain, but it’s still early days yet.

Of course, it is still much too early to be even thinking about release dates.
