Images and Release Dates for del Toro’s Pacific Rim

Ok, so it's been a wee while since my last post. Guess I needed a break after all the hype of Pometheus at the start of June. Anyway, I'm back with renewed vigour, and a cracker of a movie to report about…

On the eve of Comic Com comes the first images of Guillermo del Toro's Pacific Rim. Reported on this blog a year back, Pacific Rim is a sci-fi epic with “a group of humans piloting robots against an alien invasion of earth” as I so eloquently put it last July.

Courtesy of EW we have some of the first photos to be released of the stars in 'uniform'. First, Idris Elba (The Wire, Luther, Thor)…

Followed by Rinko Kikuchi (Babel) and Charlie Hunnam (Sons of Anarchy) …

Of course, there's a bit more to the movie than my original summary.

From /film.com, Del Toro describes the movie “There’s much more to it than the giant monsters and giant robots. We want to make it a big what if: what would happen in the real world if a twenty-five story thing came out of the sea and started destroying cities? How would the world change? What weapons do we need to develop to fight a thing like that? It’s not a fantastic distant future to which we have no relationship. We wanted to make it in the now.”

Pacific Rim has a release date of July 11th 2013 in Australia, and a release date if July 12th 2013 for the US and UK. No Canadian date as of yet.

Rinko Kikuchi and Idris Elba in Del Toro’s Pacific Rim

It’s still early days for this one, but already news us starting to trickle in, and already the cast list us sounding great. Rinko Kikuchi, Oscar nominated for her role in Babel, has joined Idris Elba (The Wire, Luther, Thor), Charlie Day (Horrible Bosses) and Charlie Hunnam (Sons of Anarchy) in Guillermo Del Toro’s first movie since The Hobbit debacle and since Hellboy II: The Golden Army in 2008.Idris

Pacific Rim starts filming later this year, and us slated for a July 2013 release. The premise is that of a group of humans piloting robots against an alien invasion of earth. With del Toro directing, this sounds like it should be more than your standard Michael Bay blockbuster! In fact, it could be a cracker.
