First official photo from Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice

Details have been few and far between on the upcoming and much-anticipated Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.

Until now, with the release of this photo of Henry Cavill as Superman. Sure, it still doesn't give much away, but it does hint at a darker, edgier direction for Superman.

Directed by Zack Snyder, starring Henry Cavill, Ben Affleck as Batman, Jesse Eisenberg as Lex Luthor and Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice has a UK release date of 29th April 2016 and a US release date of 6th May 2016.

Man of Steel Official Trailer

For many of us who've grown up with the Man of Steel on our big screens the character of Superman is an icon, from the very first time Christopher Reeve donned the famous blue and red pajamas back in 1978.

Superman is arguably the most iconic superhero there is, perhaps even more so than Batman or Spiderman. I've never been his biggest fan personally, but I'm getting excited about this one.

After a miserable attempt in 2006 by Bryan Singer to bring the franchise back with a “sort-of-sequel” (no offence Bryan, love you work normally, but…), we now get Zack Snyder (he of 300 and Watchmen fame) bringing a reboot in 2013.

With the soon to be huge Henry Cavill taking the lead, and a much “grittier” style (a la The Dark Knight of course), this promises to be huge….

two new trailers have been released. Well, it's the same trailer with two different voiceovers – the first with Russell Crowe narrating as Jor-El, and the second with Kevin Costner as Jonathan Kent…

Man of Steel has a release date of the 13th June 2013 in Australia, and a release date of the 14th June for the US and UK. No release date is yet available for Canada.

Joel Edgerton in talks to play Themistocles in 300: Battle of Artemesia

Aussie actor Joel Edgerton’s star is certainly on the rise. Critics started to sit up and take notice after his performance in Aussie drama Animal Kingdom, but after leading roles in first The Thing and now Warrior (alongside Tom Hardy), it seems Hollywood can’t get enough of Edgerton. The Sydney born actor is apparently now in talks to play the famous Greek general Themistocles in the sequel to Zack Snyder’s 2006 hit 300.

Details on 300: Battle of Artemesia are still thin on the ground, except that Snyder will not direct this time around. He has apparently written the script however, alongside Kurt Johnstad (co-writer on 300). In what seems like an odd choice, Israeli born director Noam Murro (best know for directing 2008’s Smart People) will direct.

The premise of the 300 sequel is much the same as the original, with Xerxes and his massive Persian army once again being fought off by the Greeks, except at Artemesia this time around. The Frank Miller graphic novel is based loosely on an actual historical battle much as 300 was, but no doubt there’ll yet again be plenty of artistic license!

Very few other details exist right now, except an anticipated 2013 release.

Man of Steel

Ok, so there’s no doubt that re-booting a movie franchise can really work if done well. You need look no further than Christopher Nolan’s Batman re-imagining to see that. And obviously Sony are thinking along the same lines with The Amazing Spiderman – whether or not that re-boot will work is another matter entirely.

But Superman? Haven’t they already just re-booted that? Or was Bryan Singer’s Superman Returns just a sequel? I’m confused… Either way, Superman does indeed return to the big screen in 2013 in Man of Steel.

Admittedly, news on Man of Steel isn’t exactly new, and what I’m about to tell you isn’t exactly ‘hot off the press’, but I know there are plenty if Superman fans out there who won’t mind if I recap what is the go with what will be a potentially massive blockbuster.

The biggest fact you need to know is that Henry Cavill will play Superman. British actor Cavill may not be that well-known to many of you unless you’ve been following The Tudors on TV (he’s King Henry’s good-looking best mate), but he’s about to appear as the lead in the upcoming Immortals, so his star is definitely on the rise. Of course, there’s the customary whingeing and complaining by some US movie fans at the fact that a Brit is playing such an iconic ‘American’ character, but let me just say that firstly, Superman isn’t exactly American being that he is in fact an alien (and hasn’t he just given up his US citizenship in the comic books?), and secondly, no-one complained when fellow Brit Christian Bale gave Batman a much-needed kick up the ass that any number of US citizens Michael Keaton, Val Kilmer and George Clooney (I mean, Clooney as Batman – seriously?) failed to do.

Of course, the other important thing you need to know us that Zack Snyder is in the directors chair for this one. An interesting choice, and one I think will split opinion. I’m a huge fan if 300 and even Sucker Punch, but even I’m not sure if he’s the right fit to re-launch the Superman franchise. Time will tell, eh? For now, I’m willing to give him the benefit of the doubt.

One piece of great news however, is that General Zod will feature, and being that Superman 2 was easily the best of the original sequence, I for one am excited about this news. Again though the choice of journeyman actor Michael Shannon to take on the role made famous by British legend Terrence Stamp, does leave me scratching my head a little.

Other cast includes Amy Adams as Lois Lane, Diane Lane as Martha Kent and Kevin Costner as Jonathan Kent. There is also a rumour that Russell Crowe will play Jor-El, but we’ll see about that one…

Man of Steel has started shooting in Illinois, and is due for release in June 2013.
